Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Costa Rica

Costa Rica is located in North America.

The official ISO 3166 code for Costa Rica is:

cr

The blue bands of the Costa Rican flag represent the Caribbean Sea, while the two white bands symbolize the Pacific Ocean.

In 1848, a central red band was added between the two blue bands. The colors were inspired by the French tricolor, and a new coat of arms adorned the middle of the flag.

In 1906, the flag saw a small redesign, when the coat of arms was moved slightly left towards the flagpole. On October 21st 1967, another small change was made: instead of depicting five stars, the coat of arms showed seven stars to reflect an increased number of provinces.
