The flag of Japan was first adopted on January 27th, 1870, but the design was not set until 1999, through new legislation in Decree No 127.
The flag is white with a round disc in the center. Its official name is "nisshōki", roughly translating to "sun-mark flag", but the most commonly used name is "hinomaru" or the "circle of the sun".
The red symbol in the middle of the flag symbolizes the sun and is known as the sun disc, which is what "hinomaru" is referring to. The origin of this symbol is unknown, but in history, it was common for Japanese nobility to paint similar symbols on folding fans, dating back to the 13th century.
The earliest known acknowledgement of the flag was in connection with the Battle of Sekigahara, October 21, 1600.
