Facts about the flag:
The flag of Italy has three vertical bands in red, white and green, all at the same width.
The flag originates from different flags introduced by Napoleon in northern Italy in several smaller states during 1797. The flag's design is inspired by the French tricolor.
In 1861 Italy was united, leaving the flag's design and colors as they were. A small change, however, was made by introducing the weapon of the royal house Savoy in the central white field. When Italy then became a republic in 1946, the weapon was removed. The flag was officially adopted on June 18 of the same year.
It is not known for certain where the colors of Italy's flag originate. Rumor has it that the colors come from the citizens' militia in Milan. The uniforms used by the militia came in green and white with a few details in red.
