Flag of Denmark
Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Denmark
Denmark is located in Europe.
The official ISO 3166 code for Denmark is:
Denmark's flag (Dannebrogen), according to legend, fell from the clouds to Valdemar Sejr's troops during the battle of Lindanäs, in Estonia in the early 1200s.
It is considered to be the world's oldest official flag. Every year, the event is celebrated on Valdemardagen on June 15th.
The national flag and trade flag both show a white cross on a red background. The Swedish flag has probably been inspired by the Danish, but with the colors from the national weapon, Tre Kronor. Denmark's flag laid the foundation for the Nordic tradition of cross flags.
Even historians point out that the flag of England originates from the Danish flag, as it looks exactly the same, but in reverse, with a red cross on white fields. During the same time this later flag was created, England was ruled by Normans, most of them aware of their Scandinavian roots. This obviously created close connections with their fellow Nordic countries.
