The Greek flag is known for the colors white and blue. The first Greek regent Otto was originally a part of the Bavarian princely house Wittelsbach, and these colors were used on their coat of arms.

It is often said that the colors of the flag symbolize the sea and sky (blue) and the freedom fight (white). Both blue and white have been used for hundreds of years as the main symbols for Greece. The flag has nine white and blue stripes, which symbolize the motto "Freedom or Death" having nine syllables in Greek. The cross in the left corner of the flag represents Christianity.

After the Greek freedom fight against the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century, the flag became official. It was adopted in January 1822 by the National Assembly and was used as an ensign at sea. Initially, a cross flag without stripes was used as a national flag, but it has now been replaced by the former naval ensign.

The flag became an official national flag due to a legislative amendment that occurred on December 22, 1978.
