Cyprus declared their independence on August 16, 1960; the same day they adopted their own flag.

The image on the flag is that of Cyprus itself, and the orange color represents the element copper, which is and has been, an important source of income for the country. The white color and the olive branches beneath the picture are symbols of freedom.

In 2004, Kofi Annan launched a plan to reunite the northern and southern parts of the island, and with that a new flag was introduced. The suggestion was to feature blue and red diagonal stripes to represent both Greek and Turkish ethnic groups. Between these a thicker yellow stripe was supposed to represent copper.
