The flag of Iceland was officially adopted on the 19th of June, 1915, although it had already begun to be used unofficially in 1913.

It was first established in 1944 as a national flag when Iceland became independent from Denmark. The flag of Iceland is a blue Nordic cross flag with a red and white-sided cross. The design of the flag corresponds to the state weapon of Iceland, which is a shield.

There is no official clarification of the flag's symbolism, but a common interpretation is that the colors represent the three elements, of which the island has been created - fire, ice and water. The traditional Icelandic colors white and blue, in combination with red, indicate Iceland's historical connection with Norway.
