The flag of Kyrgyzstan was adopted on March 3rd, 1992 by the parliament, and uses the proportions 3:5.
The flag is red with a golden sun in the middle featuring 40 uniformly spaced rays. The 40 rays symbolize the 40 tribes of Kyrgyzstan that, according to tradition, were unified by the national hero, Manas.
Red is Manas' color, but also has a connection with the old Soviet flag. The stylized emblem or "sun" in the center, represents both peace and wealth, and the fatherland and the universe as a whole. Kyrgyzstan saw an influx of Russians in the 19th century. Today's Kyrgyzstan was ruled under Turkestan ASSR following the Russian Revolution, as a part of the Russian SFSR.
