The flag's 14 red and white stripes represent the 13 states of Malaysia and its federal central government. In the blue canton, there is a symbol of Islam comprising the crescent and a 14 pointed-star. The canton itself stands for the unity of the Malaysian people.
Malaysia is a federation within the British Commonwealth. When the flag was first formed, in connection with the creation of the Federation of Malaya in 1948, the flag featured 11 stripes, representing the former British dependencies, and the star also featured 11 points. When Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah joined the federation, the stripes and the points were expanded to 13, yet the flag has not been changed since Singapore left the federation.
