Flag of Nauru

Flag of Nauru

Nauru is located in Oceania.

The official ISO 3166 code for Nauru is:

nr

Facts about the flag:
The darker blue color is a symbol of the sky and the sea, and the yellow band symbolizes the equator. The position of the star shows the geographical location of the country, which lies just one degree south of the equator.

The twelve points of the white star represent Nauru's twelve original tribes, and the color white represents the island's most valuable natural resource and its only exported product; phosphate.

The flag was adopted the same year and date as Nauru gained independence from Australia. This occurred on January 31st, 1968. The country was previously called Pleasant Island, and remains the world's smallest independent republic, by both area and population.
