The colors red and blue on the flag of Panama stand for the two parties within the country, the liberal and the conservative, that were dominant at the time the flag was adopted. The white color demonstrates that both parties operated peacefully, with peaceful intentions.

Their first flag as an independent nation resembled the flag of the USA. It featured horizontal lines in red and yellow, and a blue field in the canton with two suns, interconnected with a yellow band. These represented the two world seas and their connection through the Panama Canal. The country's then President, Manuel A. Guerrero, preferred the design of his son, which is the current flag. It was adopted on the 3rd of November, 1903.
