The colors of the Romanian flag are typical of the nation and derive from Roman times. When Romania became an independent kingdom, the current tricolor was adopted for the national flag in 1859.

A few years later, in 1867, the monarch's weapon was introduced to the middle of the flag, but was later replaced by the state weapon during the communist period of 1948 - 1989.

After the fall of the communist regime, the blue, yellow and red tricolor was once again reinstalled, on December 27th, 1989.

The Romanian flag is very similar to the flag of Chad, with a slight color difference in the blue element. The Romanian flag has a slightly lighter nuance while the flag of Chad shares the same blue shade as the French tricolor.
