Facts about the flag:
The country's current flag is a minor modification of the one used by the Liberation Movement MLSTP (Movimento de Libertação de São Tomé e Príncipe), in 1972.

The country was a Portuguese colony from the 1400s, up until the year 1974. The difference between the two flags is that the two green bands and the middle yellow band are of the same width in the MLSTP flag. Whereas in the national flag, the two green bands are slightly narrower than the yellow one.

The stars in the flag stand for the two islands of São Tomé and Príncipe. The colors used are traditional pan-African colors. The red triangle symbolizes the blood sacrificed in the freedom fight. The flag was adopted on November 5th, 1975.
