Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is located in Asia.

The official ISO 3166 code for Sri Lanka is:

lk

The green field on the flag is a symbol of the Muslim minority in the country, and the orange field symbolizes the Hindu minority.

The dominant religion, or rather the view of life, is Buddhism, and it is represented by the four leaves around the lion, from the Bodhi tree, and by the yellow color. Since the 5th century, the lion has remained a national symbol of Sri Lanka. It was King Vijaya who first introduced a lion flag to the island.

The flag was adopted on the 17th of December, 1978. The two fields for Islam and Hinduism were first introduced into the last flag after a protest in 1951. The current version is similar to its predecessor, only minor adjustments have been made.
