Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Switzerland

Switzerland is located in Europe.

The official ISO 3166 code for Switzerland is:

ch

The flag was officially adopted on the 6th of April, 1862.

The country was without a common national flag for a long time. During the Middle Ages, there were only individual flags for the various cantons, or the states, in the country. The flag is partially based on the Schwyz canton that was used as a common field sign during the Battle of Laupen, 1339.

Yet, since the time of the Crusades, Switzerland have favored a white Greek cross on a red-colored flag.

The symbol of the Red Cross is based on the Swiss flag. The flag of the nation is square, like the flag of the Vatican, which is quite unusual as most flags adopt a more rectangular shape. Yet, their trade flag is not square.
