Flag of Uruguay

Flag of Uruguay

Uruguay is located in South America.

The official ISO 3166 code for Uruguay is:

uy

Facts about the flag:
The flag of Uruguay was adopted on July 11th, 1830, when the number of stripes in the flag was reduced from 17 to 9.

There are five white stripes and four blue ones in the current flag, thus the top and the bottom stripe are both white. In the upper left corner, there is a yellow sun with a white background. The sun in the flag has 16 rays with a face in the center.

The colors and the sun symbolize the union between Uruguay and Argentina that existed until 1828. The white and blue stripes represent the nine departments dividing Uruguay during that time. The sun also stands for independence, a similar symbol to the one found in the national flag of Argentina.
