Flag of Burundi

Flag of Burundi

Burundi is located in Africa.

The official ISO 3166 code for Burundi is:

bi

Facts about the flag:
The red fields of the Burundi flag stand for the freedom fight, the two greens symbolize hope, and the white color is the typical color of peace. The three stars in the center of the flag stand for the three words used in the motto; unité, travail, progrès (unity, work and progress).

Burundi became an independent monarchy in 1962. The flag back then was a similar version of the modern one, but instead of using stars, there were two symbols in the shape of a plant and a karyenda, which is a kind of drum. The karyenda is a symbol for the king's power, and was obviously removed when Burundi became a republic in 1966. One year later, the plant was replaced by the three stars.
