Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Jamaica
Jamaica is located in North America.
The official ISO 3166 code for Jamaica is:
The flag of Jamaica was adopted on August 6th, 1962.
The day in question was Jamaica's National Day. The flag features a yellow saltire (Saint Andrew's Cross), symbolizing the coat of arms of the capital Kingston. The two green fields on the flag represent agriculture and the two black fields symbolize the past and Jamaica's history.
The yellow color symbolize the sun, namely how important it is for life and how grateful people should be for its existence. Originally, there was a competition in 1962 to design a new national flag in connection with gaining independence, and the current version was one of the entries.
The stripes used to be horizontal, but since it made the flag too similar to the flag of Tanganyika, it was decided to go for a saltire in the form of a diagonal cross.
Jamaica's flag is the only national flag that lacks the colors red and blue. All other flags have some hue of red, blue, or both.
