In addition to the traditional pan-African colors of red, yellow and green, other colors originate from previous colonial rule, and the yellow star signifies independence.
At the outset, the idea was that there would be a common flag for countries that formed part of a union under France. The first president of the republic Barthélemy Boganda envisioned that blue would represent the king’s sea, white would be Chad’s cotton, yellow symbolized Central Africa’s natural resources, green was Gabon’s forests, red was the blood sacrificed by martyrs, while the star led people to their freedom.
