The flag of Comoros was not adopted until the 21st century. On New Year's Eve 2001, the flag was adopted with the proportions 3:5.
The flag consists of four horizontal stripes in the colors yellow, white, red and blue, with a green triangle on the inner side, closest to the flag pole. Inside this triangle, stands a white crescent with four white five-pointed stars.
The stripes represent the country's four main islands: Moheli, Njazidja, Ndzuwani and Mayotte. The four stars also represent the main islands. The island of Mayotte still belongs to France, but Comoros considers the island its own.
The crescent, the stars and the green color are traditional Islamic symbols. The flag is inspired by an earlier flag, supposed to symbolize the socialist ideology of the island country.
