There is no official explanation of what the colors in the flag of Colombia are supposed to represent.

One of the most common interpretations is that the yellow symbolizes the riches of the country, the blue is a symbol of the Atlantic Ocean, and the red represents the blood sacrificed by the people in their fight for an independent Colombia.

The flag was adopted on November 26, 1861. It resembles the flag of Gran Colombia, a former federal republic that consisted of three departments. King Bolívar dreamed of uniting all of South America, but he was relatively alone with his vision. The Federation ceased to exist in 1831, due to a civil war between different nations. Once Bolívar resigned, the war escalated and it became the end of Gran Colombia.
