The flag of East Timor was adopted in connection with the independence in 2002 with the proportions 1:2. The flag is generally red with a black triangle at the inner edge of the flag. East Timor is also called Timor-Leste.
On the outside of the triangle there is a yellow apex and inside the black triangle you find a white five-pointed star. The red background stands for the fight they have gone through to reach national liberation. The yellow stands for the traces after the colonial history of the country and black for the difficulties the people will be faced with.
The white star on a black background stands for hope for the future, and the very color of white symbolizes peace. East Timor was declared independent on the 28th of November, 1975, after being a Portuguese colony.
