The flag was adopted on the 7th of August, 1990, but it was already in use as far back as the 1880s, by students protesting against the Russian occupation.
The blue color represents freedom, the black stands for the past, and the white color symbolizes hope for Estonia's future. Another interpretation is that the blue stands for the sea, the black for a fertile land, and the white color represents the people and purity.
On the 1st of January, 2006, a new flag law was adopted in Estonia. The country currently celebrates 13 flag days, and now all citizens have the right to use the flag of the country as a national flag.
