Flag of Haiti
Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Haiti
Haiti is located in North America.
The official ISO 3166 code for Haiti is:
Haiti's flag was initially based on the French tricolor, but was adopted in its present form on February 25, 1986.
The blue and red fields were vertical for a long period of time, like the tricolor, but changed to horizontal fields shortly after the dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier left the country. The blue and the red colors supposedly symbolize the country's ethnicities. During the Duvalier regime, between 1964 and 1986, black was used instead of blue.
In the center of the flag, you can spot the country's state weapon. Some say that the white in the flag was torn off by rebel leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and thus the new flag was created.
Rumor has it that the white in the flag symbolized the white people, which led to an extinction of the whites. Considering the persecutions, there is probably some truth to it.
