Flag of Ireland

Flag of Ireland

Ireland is located in Europe.

The official ISO 3166 code for Ireland is:

ie

Facts about the flag:
The flag of Ireland was officially adopted on January 21, 1919, and was enrolled into the constitution in 1937.

The flag is a tricolor with the colors green, white and orange. However, these colors had occurred earlier than 1919, notably in the version of the 1830s.

Over time, the flag became a bigger symbol of the fight for freedom against the British empire. A non-official interpretation of the colors in the flag points out that the green color represents Catholicism and all the islands of Ireland themselves.

Orange symbolizes the Protestant minority and white represents the peace that is supposed to unify the two groups. However, there is no official interpretation of the colors. Some say the flag is inspired by the Indian flag, a nation that also fought for freedom against the British.
