Flag of Kiribati
Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Kiribati
Kiribati is located in Oceania.
The official ISO 3166 code for Kiribati is:
The Kiribati flag was adopted on July 12, 1979, having the proportions 1:2.
Ever since gaining independence in 1979, the flag has consisted of an upper red half with a large frigate bird flying above the rising sun, which is made of gold with 17 rays. The lower half consists of the color blue with three white horizontal bands formed in a wave.
The 17 rays represent the 16 Gilbert Islands and Banaba, formerly part of the Gilbert Islands. The wave-shaped bands represent the three archipelagos: the Gilbert Islands, the Phoenix Islands and the Line Islands.
Originally, the flag was simply a contribution in a contest to create Kiribati's new national flag. The winning entry was later changed by the United Kingdom Heraldic authority: the College of Arms, but due to heavy protests from the population, the original version was reintroduced.
