The flag originates from the freedom movement, Frelimo. The first flag since the independence looked similar to Frelimo's, aside from the emblem, which even exists on today's flag in an updated version, with a star replacing the wheel. Mozambique and Guatemala are the only two countries with small arms on their flags.
The colors on the flag symbolize the following: green represents the riches of the earth, black the African continent, yellow the subsoil assets to minerals, white is the symbol of peace, and red the fight for freedom and independence.
A star features on the emblem, which stands for solidarity and socialism, the book represents education, the hack refers to the peasants and their agriculture, and finally, the weapon is the nation's determination to defend their freedom.
