Flag of New Jersey

U.S state flag of New Jersey
Facts, history and meaning about the flag of New Jersey

The state flag of New Jersey is a beautiful emblem that represents the unique history and geography of this East Coast state. It features a buff-colored background with the state seal emblazoned in the center, surrounded by a blue circle. Above the seal is a banner with the state motto, "Liberty and Prosperity," written in gold letters.

The state seal itself is highly detailed and symbolic. In the center is a shield with three plows, representing the state's agriculture industry. Above the shield is a horse's head and helmet, representing the state's revolutionary history and military tradition. The helmet is encircled by a blue ribbon with the year of statehood, 1776, written in gold letters. The shield is supported by two female figures: Liberty, holding a staff with a liberty cap, and Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, holding a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables.

The blue circle surrounding the seal represents the state's status as one of the original thirteen colonies. The color blue also represents the ocean and the state's many rivers and streams. The buff-colored background is a nod to the state's nickname, the "Garden State," and represents the fertile farmland that covers much of the state.
