The colors of the Niger tricolor symbolize the orange areas in the northern parts of the country, in the desert of Sahara. White is the river Niger and the green stands for the southern, verdant parts of the country, as well as symbolizing hope.
The great sun in the middle of the white field is a symbol of the people's will to fight and sacrifice for the freedom of their nation.
The flag was used in French West Africa, when the country was colonized by the French. It was designed and adopted on November 23rd, 1959, one year before Niger's independence. The flag, the state weapons, the national anthem and the motto; "Fraternité, Travail, Progrés" (fraternity, work, progress) together create an official symbol of the Republic of Niger.
