The yellow circle is a symbol of the moon. The full moon is traditionally said to be the best time to sow, fish, and even celebrate weddings. It also stands for calm, peace and love. The light blue color of the flag represents the country's independence, and it is also seen as a connection to the Federated States of Micronesia and the UN flag.

Palau previously belonged to the Federated States of Micronesia, a former protectorate of the Pacific States of America. When the Federated States of Micronesia were formed and became independent in 1978, Palau chose not to join the federation. Their flag was adopted on the 1st of January, 1981, when they became a republic. Independence reached Palau first in 1994.
