The green color represents Henry the Navigator, a Portuguese prince from the 1400s, known for supporting the first voyage of discovery across the Atlantic Ocean and along the west coast of Africa.

Red stands for the revolution. The emblem on the flag is an image of the state weapon, the actual state weapon has olive branches around the shield and a band. It stands as a symbol of a time of great power in Portugal.

The flag was adopted on the 30th of June, 1911, at the same time, Portugal went from being a monarchy to becoming a republic. During the time of the monarchy, the flag was white and blue. The current colors refer to the country's history as a significant shipping power.
