Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Suriname

Suriname is located in South America.

The official ISO 3166 code for Suriname is:

sr

Green stands for hope and a good harvest, white is a symbol of justice and peace, the star represents a united people, and red signifies love, and faith in progress.

The colors on the flag originate from the two largest political parties that were most dominant at the time the flag was created. When designing the flag, they also wanted to radiate cohesion and future confidence. The flag was adopted on the 25th of November, 1975, with the independence from the Netherlands.

Before the independence, the flag was white with five stars in different colors, attached to a circle. They represented the larger ethnic groups of the population.
