The Trinidad & Tobago flag was officially adopted to commemorate the much-awaited independence on August 31st, 1962, with the proportions 3:5. The elements in the flag are red, black and white.

The background is red with a black diagonal band crossing the flag from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner. The black band has a white border surrounding it on both sides, separating the black from the red field. The white color symbolizes the sea around the islands, and the purity of the national endeavor, as well as equality.

The black stands for the country's energy and unity, but also symbolizes its riches.
