When the country established its independence in 1983, a nationwide competition for a new national flag was launched.
The winning contribution was designed by Edrice Lewis, who took full responsibility in creating both the symbols and the color scheme.
Green stands for the fertile land, yellow represents the sun, and red symbolizes the fight for freedom. The white stars in the black field are a symbol of hope and freedom.
Nevis has adopted its own flag in yellow with a miniature national flag occupying the top, hoist-side corner and an image of Nevis, a volcano, in the colors white, green and blue.
