Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Canary Islands

Canary Islands is located in Europe.

The official ISO 3166 code for Canary Islands is:

IC

The flag of the Canary Islands is a vibrant emblem that represents the unique heritage and identity of this autonomous region of Spain. It consists of three vertical stripes of equal width. From left to right, the colors are white, blue, and yellow. In the center of the flag is the coat of arms of the Canary Islands, which features two dogs supporting a shield. The shield displays the seven islands of the archipelago in silver, set against a blue background, topped with a crown.

The current design of the flag was officially adopted on August 10, 1982, when the Canary Islands gained autonomy from Spain. However, the origins of the flag date back to the 1960s, when various groups advocating for Canarian identity and self-governance began to use a similar design. The choice of colors is deeply symbolic: white represents the snow-capped peaks of the islands, blue symbolizes the surrounding Atlantic Ocean, and yellow reflects the islands' sandy beaches and sunny climate.

The coat of arms is also rich in symbolism. The dogs, believed to be a reference to the large native dogs that were found on the islands when they were first visited by Europeans, emphasize the name "Canary Islands," derived from the Latin "Canariae Insulae," meaning "Island of the Dogs." The seven islands on the shield symbolize the main islands of the archipelago.

The Canary Islands is a part of the European Union and uses the EU currency Euro.
