Flag of Maldives
Facts, history and meaning about the flag of Maldives

Maldives is located in Asia.

The official ISO 3166 code for Maldives is:

mv

The flag's crescent moon is a classic Islamic symbol, as is the green color, which is also considered the color of hope. The red color represents the blood spilled in the country's struggle for freedom.

The first flag of the Maldives was completely red and dated back to the flag used by Arabic seafarers that traded with the islands in the beginning of the 10th century. During the British protectorate, starting in 1887, the flag had short diagonal stripes in black and white on the inner edge.

The moon crescent was added at the beginning of the 20th century. When the Maldives gained complete independence, the black and white stripes were removed, and the flag's current design was adopted on July 26th, 1968.
