The sun on the flag of Macedonia is supposed to represent the "New Sun of Liberty," which is also mentioned in Macedonia's national anthem. After the country's independence from Yugoslavia, a flag with a yellow star consisting of 16 rays was introduced.
This symbol is also found far back in history, as being part of Hellenistic shields and coins found in excavations from ancient Macedonia. The symbol was created by Filip II.
According to the Greeks, ancient Macedonia was the forerunner of modern Greece. Furthermore, the Greeks considered this star a symbol of its unification. This led to a conflict, which resulted in a Greek embargo against Macedonia. Eventually, both countries came to an agreement and the flag of Macedonia was created.
