Green is a symbol of hope, wealth, the power of the people, and natural resources. The yellow stripe represents economic growth in the country and the effort to achieve progression, while blue is for achieving peace through happiness.

The sun on the flag, which features a different shade of yellow to the stripe, symbolizes the light that exists to enlighten the people. This light also represents unity, honesty and the struggle against ignorance.

Throughout history, the country has been a German colony, a Belgian colony and a UN-region under the rule of Belgium. After Rwanda gained their independence, the country divided into two nations, Rwanda and Burundi. The flag of Rwanda was adopted on December 31st, 2001.
